Morning - Journey to Malindi and Check-In

Afternoon - Malindi Old Town Walking Tour

Malindi's Old Town is compact and walkable and full of things that repay a slow pace. The town has been a trading port since at least the 14th century, when Ibn Battuta passed through and noted its prosperity. The Portuguese arrived in 1498 with Vasco da Gama, who found a friendly reception here in contrast to the hostility he had encountered further south. The Swahili, the Arab traders, the Portuguese navigators, and later the British colonial administration all left marks on the town that are still legible if you know where to look.

Your guided walk covers the Friday Mosque, one of the oldest on the Kenya coast. The old town streets with their carved doorways and coral-lime walls. The fish market at the harbour, still operating as it has for centuries, still smelling exactly as you would expect. And the Portuguese Chapel of Saint Francis, a small whitewashed building that has been standing since the early 16th century and is believed to be one of the oldest churches in sub-Saharan Africa.

Late Afternoon - Vasco da Gama Pillar

A short distance from the old town, on a coral promontory above the sea, stands the Vasco da Gama Pillar. A Portuguese navigational monument erected in 1498 to mark da Gama's landing point on his voyage to India, it is one of the oldest European structures in sub-Saharan Africa and one of the most quietly affecting. The pillar itself is modest. What surrounds it is not. The view from the promontory takes in the full sweep of Malindi Bay, the reef line visible just offshore, the Indian Ocean beyond it extending to the horizon with nothing between you and India.

Evening - Swahili Seafood Dinner

Malindi has been eating well from the sea for a very long time, and dinner on the first night is a good opportunity to understand why. The town's restaurant scene is centred on fresh Indian Ocean seafood prepared with Swahili spicing. Grilled lobster, coconut crab, kingfish in tamarind, octopus prepared in the coastal style. Your guide will take you to where the kitchen is honest and the fish arrived this morning. Return to Scorpio Villas well fed.

Morning - Malindi Marine National Park

Established in 1968 alongside Watamu, Malindi Marine National Park was one of the first two marine protected areas in Kenya and remains among the most important. The park's coral gardens begin within a short boat ride from shore, and the diversity of marine life they support reflects five decades of protection.

Your morning begins with a glass-bottomed boat tour over the reef, giving your group a clear view of the coral formations, the fish life, and the overall structure of the reef system before entering the water. The snorkelling session that follows takes you into the coral gardens directly, with your guide identifying species and pointing out the sections of the reef that reward the closest attention. Parrotfish, angelfish, surgeonfish, sea turtles moving through the water column, the occasional moray eel watching from a crevice. The marine park is why many people come to Malindi and it consistently justifies the reputation.

Afternoon - Falconry of Africa

The Falconry of Africa at Malindi is one of those experiences that does not fit neatly into the standard coastal itinerary and is better for it. East Africa's only falconry centre houses over 60 species of birds of prey, reptiles, and small mammals, with daily flying demonstrations that show the birds working in the way they were bred or evolved to work.

The centre runs educational programmes and conservation work alongside the visitor experience, and the staff knowledge of raptors and their ecosystems is genuine and detailed. For travellers with children, it is the afternoon highlight of the trip. For travellers without children, it is still genuinely impressive. A Harris hawk landing on your glove at speed has a way of demanding your full attention.

Late Afternoon - Sabaki River Estuary

The Sabaki River meets the Indian Ocean just north of Malindi, creating an estuary environment that is one of the most productive birding sites on the Kenya coast. The mudflats and sandbars that form at the river mouth attract large numbers of migratory wading birds between August and April, including species that have flown from Siberia, Scandinavia, and Central Asia to winter on this particular stretch of East African coastline.

Even outside peak migration season the estuary holds good numbers of resident species, herons, egrets, kingfishers, African fish eagles, and the terns that work the river mouth at low tide. Morning - Malindi Cultural Centre and Market

The third morning moves through the living culture of the town. The Malindi Cultural Centre brings together Swahili and Giriama traditions that have defined this stretch of the coast for centuries, with displays of traditional dress, craft techniques, music, and the oral histories that connect contemporary Malindi to its pre-colonial past. It is a well-run centre that takes its material seriously and presents it without condescension.

From the cultural centre, your guide takes you into Malindi's main market. The produce section handles the full range of coastal Kenya's agricultural output, mangoes and cassava and dried fish and coconuts at every stage of processing. The craft section carries the kind of work that is actually made locally rather than shipped in from Nairobi. Your guide knows the difference and will make sure you do too.

Afternoon - Gedi Ruins Day Trip

Gedi is twenty kilometres south of Malindi, just outside Watamu, and well worth the drive for a half-day visit. The medieval Swahili town was built in the 13th century at the height of the Indian Ocean trading network that connected East Africa to Arabia, Persia, India, and China. At its peak it housed several thousand people in a walled town of mosques, palaces, and merchant houses built from coral limestone. By the 17th century it was abandoned, for reasons that remain genuinely unclear to archaeologists.

The coastal forest has been growing back through the ruins ever since. Fig trees push through mosque floors. The roots of old hardwoods have cracked walls that were built to last. Your guided tour covers the great mosque, the sultan's palace, the pillar tombs, and the outer residential quarters, with your guide drawing on current archaeological understanding to bring the site alive without pretending to resolve the mysteries it still holds. Return to Malindi in the late afternoon.

Evening - Sundowners and Beach Dinner

Morning - Full Beach Day and Reef Snorkelling

The final morning of your malindi tour package belongs to the beach and the water. Malindi's Indian Ocean frontage runs for several kilometres of white sand, and at low tide the reef flats are accessible on foot, the coral pools filled with small fish and sea urchins and the occasional octopus working its way across the sand. Your guide can take you to the best reef access points for a final snorkelling session, or you can simply claim a stretch of beach and stay there until lunch.

Either option is valid. The beach at Malindi on a clear morning, with the reef visible just offshore and the town behind you and nothing scheduled until the afternoon, is one of the better places to be on the East African coast. It does not need improving with an activity.

Afternoon - Farewell Lunch and Transfer
