The afternoon is best spent on foot in Stone Town itself. The old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved Swahili coastal trading towns in Africa. Your guide will walk you through the winding lanes past the House of Wonders, the Old Arab Fort, the Palace Museum, and the ornately carved wooden doors that are the most recognisable feature of the town's architecture. A visit to the former slave market, now home to the Anglican Christ Church Cathedral, provides important historical context for the island's complicated past.

As evening arrives, make your way to the Forodhani Gardens waterfront night market for your first taste of Zanzibari street food. After breakfast at the hotel, the morning is dedicated to a boat trip to Changuu Island, more commonly known as Prison Island. The island sits about 5 kilometres off the Stone Town coast and takes its name from a prison that was built here in the late 1800s but never actually used to house prisoners. Today it is most famous for its colony of giant Aldabra tortoises, some of which are over a century old. The beach here is also one of the cleaner swimming spots close to Stone Town, with good snorkelling off the reef edge.

The afternoon is reserved for a Zanzibari cooking class, one of the most rewarding experiences available on the island. Zanzibar's cuisine reflects its history as a spice trading hub: coconut milk, cardamom, cloves, tamarind, and freshly caught seafood are the building blocks of a kitchen tradition that is distinct from anywhere else in East Africa. A local host will guide you through the preparation of two or three traditional dishes, ending with a shared meal. For couples and honeymooners, this is a particularly enjoyable afternoon.

Zanzibar earned the name Spice Island through centuries of clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and black pepper production, and a guided spice farm tour remains one of the island's most distinctive activities. Your morning visit to a working plantation takes you among the trees and plants, with a guide explaining how each spice grows, how it is harvested, and what it has historically been used for. Most tours include the opportunity to taste freshly picked produce and finish with a traditional Zanzibari lunch served with coconut rice and spiced curries.

After the farm visit, a short detour takes you to the Kidichi Persian Baths, built in the 1850s for a Persian princess who married Sultan Seyyid Said. In the mid-afternoon, your driver will transfer you north to Nungwi. The waters here support healthy coral gardens, reef fish in exceptional variety, sea turtles, moray eels, and octopus. After returning to Nungwi for lunch at the resort, the afternoon heads inland to Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, Zanzibar's only gazetted national park. The park protects a rare patch of indigenous forest and is the last stronghold of the Zanzibar red colobus monkey, a species endemic to the island and found nowhere else on earth. Wooden dhow boats have been central to Zanzibari life for centuries, and an evening on board as the sun sets behind the island, with the sea turning from blue to gold, is one of those experiences that genuinely justifies the journey.
